Duval County Esol Program

Native English and Spanish speaking students are accepted in the program to provide a mix of opportunities for all. Academic success of all dual language students is achieved by teaching academic and resource classes in English and Spanish. For example, math may be taught in Spanish in 3rd grade and in English in 4th grade. To help “bridging” for academic excellence, teachers explain subject contents and vocabulary in the native language of students to reinforce knowledge and skills acquired in either English or Spanish language. The DCPS model for the Dual Language Program is based on more than 20 years of research, theory, and best teaching practices in the United States and Canada: • effective integration of academic content and language education, • LAFS and MAFS standard-based curriculum, • effective teaching strategies and practices for dual language learners, • highly qualified leaders, teachers, and staff, • parent involvement in the bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate educational journey, • reinforcement in student’s primary language, and • students’ academic gains that are at or above expectations.
